My Welcomed Guest is a solo game about being trapped in Faerie and trying to bargain your way home. Throughout the game you will be answering questions and potentially accruing Taboo, which is an indicator of faerie taboos you may have breached. Sometimes without you knowing what action it was that directly broke the taboo. The game will be played over five acts.

This game was created as part of the Short and Easy game Jam.

You will need some additional materials:

  • Something to write on.
    • You can print out the game and write directly on the paper, use a journal, an electronic source, or something else that suits your fancy.
  • Something to write with.
    • If you have a favorite pen or pencil, get that. If not, anything will do, a pen, pencil or crayon.
  • A six sided die.
    • There are many electronic versions available if you don’t have a d6 easily accessible.
  • A place to accrue Taboo marks.
    • This can the corner or back side of a page, an index card, a sticky note, or a bowl to hold glass beads. The important thing is to know how many Taboo marks you have accrued.

I believe in paying people for their work. This game is priced at $3, but if that isn't something you can do right now, in the spirit of Faerie bargains, send me an email (dawnbeargames at gmail) and I'll send you a copy. It will come with the caveat, that if you play it, just let me know you played it. No need for a review or feedback (though I would love feedback), just to know that you played it. I won't promise to get you the game immediately, but I will likely get back to you with in a couple of days.

I love this game. I have made a tiny pocket version of it that I keep in an Altoids tin along with small dice and a mini-abacus to use as Taboo tokens. It's one that I regularly recommend to people interested in solo TTRPGs.

Do you think that this game would be fun and appropriate for kids between the ages of 7-10? Thanks!

I had such bad luck when playing this haha! I only did short answers cause I wanted a quick way to flesh out a new character of mine but my dice were against me. At the end I promised 5/6 offerings and didn't even make it out! But it was still fun and I DID flesh out my character :]

Yay!!!
Dice are fickle sometimes... but so are the Fae. I'm glad it helped you flesh out your character!

Let me start with I definitely recommend playing this flexible fae-inspired game. It's flexible in story and in length of the game

I got this one in the bundle for Racial Justice and Equality and only just got round to playing it. I had a blast and it resulted in a story of 8 full pages, though this definitely was not necessary. It could definitely have been shorter, but I like to be elaborate. The prompts also helped me re-evaluate what certain core rules of faerie mean to me and my version of faerie which I will use in other games. I did make it even more random for myself by flipping a coin to see if my person was going to lie to the fae or not.

Yay!!!
I'm super glad you enjoyed it. AND that it made you think about re-evaluate core rules of faerie.

I just played this and had a good (if sad) time. But that's the sort of thing I enjoy, so it's all good.

My person escaped to faerie after the loss of someone close, and didn't especially want to leave, and in the end, they didn't have to. Their host was a pile of moulding leaves with a pair of vibrant yellow eyes, who reminded them of the October holidays they had with family, of the cottage the host had seen years ago when it took the sight from one of the person's Nana's eyes in return for her finding her way home.

Definitely enjoyed it, was a lot more writing than I'm used to. Thankfully in faerie, writing instruments just change in colour and size when you change topic, no biggie.

Thank you for playing and posting. I am so glad you enjoyed it. I can totally relate with the feeling of not wanting to leave once you are able to.

I just played this game and it was such a delight. The game prompts build on each other and rolls provide enough randomness to keep it creative. It was great to see how everything was connected and used to build the story. I like the option about how much in depth one can go into with the responses, making the game as long as you want it to be. My character didn’t make it out, but I hope that the next character does!

Yay!!!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It's an absolute delight to hear and has definitely made my day!

Got this via the racial justice bundle, and I absolutely love it! I'm very new to solo player ttrpg, this one being the first I played, and it's so lovely. I had such a great time with it, I ended up writing 4 pages of answers. Definitely will revisit this in the future.

Awesome! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

I'm going to add it to another bundle, one focused on solo games, soon. So if there's anyone out there who didn't get that bundle there will be another soon with a lot of other solo games.

My Welcomed Guest is an 8 page game, probably solo or one player/one GM, about trying to navigate your way out of faerie.

The game is played as a series of structured questions, and almost has a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure vibe to it. There's only one tracked stat, Taboo, which you accumulate as you make choices that do not fit the expected standard of behavior for a mortal travelling in faerie.

Success isn't guaranteed, and the game ultimately comes down to a dice roll, but it's a solid immersive experience, and both short and fun.

If you have time to kill before a game with a friend, or if you want to play a narrative-focused branching path game, I would strongly recommend giving My Welcomed Guest a shot.

Minor Issues:

-Page 8, 7+, "lead" should be "would have led"

Thank you so much!
I'm happy you enjoyed it.

Also thanks for the editing note... I should probably fix it, if for no other reason anyone else who comes here after your wonderful words will have a better version.

So grateful to have stumbled across this gem in the Racial Justice Bundle, I'd so much fun with it! I can't remember the last time I've written for the joy of it, but 10 notebook pages down and I've gotten more than a little attached. Thanks for your lovely work :'^)!

Wonderful!!!

This is so amazing to read. I am so glad you enjoyed it!

Hello! I got your game through the bundle for Racial Justice and Equality gifted to me by a friend.

I just wanted to say that I enjoyed playing your game very much! If I had the money, I'd pay for the $3 because I feel that it was too much of a steal for me. I hope you continue making other games!

Thank you so much!

This means a lot to me. Don't worry about paying for my game, I'm just glad you enjoyed it.

I do plan on doing some more stuff. If you don't have the funds to pay for it, I will put up some community copies, and if those are all gone, just reach out to me. I'll send you a copy.
